چکیده

Understanding traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyles in our modern world is fundamental to understanding of their viability, as well the role humans predators structuring ecosystems. Here, we examine factors that drive prey preferences people by reviewing 85 published studies from 161 tropical, temperate and boreal sites across five continents. From these studies, estimated Jacobs' selectivity index values (D) for 2243 species/spatiotemporal records representing 504 species 42 vertebrate orders based on a sample size 799,072 kill (median = 259). Hunter-gatherers preferentially hunted 11 large-bodied, riskier species, were capable capturing ranging 0.6 535.3 kg, but avoided those smaller than 2.5 kg. Mate preferences among Hadza hunter-gatherers.

The literature on human mate preferences is vast but most data come from studies on college students in complex societies, who represent a thin slice of cultural variation in an evolutionarily novel environment. Here, I present data on the mate preferences of men and women in a society of hunter-gatherers, the Hadza of Tanzania. Hadza men value fertility in a mate more than women do, and women ...

Khoisan hunter-gatherers have been the largest population throughout most of modern-human demographic history

The Khoisan people from Southern Africa maintained ancient lifestyles as hunter-gatherers or pastoralists up to modern times, though little else is known about their early history. Here we infer early demographic histories of modern humans using whole-genome sequences of five Khoisan individuals and one Bantu speaker. Comparison with a 420 K SNP data set from worldwide individuals demonstrates ...

Nonlinear scaling of space use in human hunter-gatherers.

Use of space by both humans and other mammals should reflect underlying physiological, ecological, and behavioral processes. In particular, the space used by an individual for its normal activities should reflect the interplay of three constraints: (i) metabolic resource demand, (ii) environmental resource supply, and (iii) social behaviors that determine the extent to which space is used exclu...

Hunter-gatherers and other primates as prey, predators, and competitors of snakes.

Relationships between primates and snakes are of widespread interest from anthropological, psychological, and evolutionary perspectives, but surprisingly, little is known about the dangers that serpents have posed to people with prehistoric lifestyles and nonhuman primates. Here, we report ethnographic observations of 120 Philippine Agta Negritos when they were still preliterate hunter-gatherer...
